Cubberoo Working Kelpies

Cubberoo Working Kelpies (reg WKC)

taken by "The Land" July, 2005 - 4 generations, Donnee, Lottee, Charlee (at top) & Vain

I have endeavoured to retain the qualities Tindal Brook had and have tried to keep my lines as pure as possible with only limited outcrosses.  My kelpies are all registered with the Working Kelpie Council and are selected on their mustering and paddock ability, this does not mean they are not capable in the yard, but they must have natural work and the ability to think for themselves otherwise they are useless in our big paddocks and timbered areas.  My dogs are used for cattle work and so must have the strength to shift stock while also having big casts, cover and distance as stock here are not mustered as often and need to be worked quietly particularly in the heat.  The big western merinos are not as quiet as some of the closer settled areas' sheep and need dogs with cover to keep them settled.  Our dogs also must be sound and have endurance as they can have some really big days covering long distances in harsh weather conditions.

I am sorry about the photos, I want to put "working" photos of my current dogs but with these devastating drought conditions we have here it has been very difficult to take any. "Cubberoo" has been in severe drought for the years:- 2000, 2002, 2003, early 2004, 2006 & 2007.

Bitches:

Tindal Brook (1982-1998)

              Tindal Brook                                                                       Glenville Donald

Brook, the foundation bitch of my stud as it is today, was wonderful to work as she was class personified but also had great natural stock sense and brains.  Her style of work was not surprising as she had several crosses of Portpatrick Taj.  She worked sheep all her life and only did limited cattle work in her old age.  She was totally vice free and could be trusted loose around the house without being restricted.  Despite a long working life she lived to 16 years of age.  It is uncanny how much like Karrawarra Lottie, her great, great, great grandmother, she was in looks and I think nature from what I can gather.  Brook was bred by Peter Tindal previously of "Ramornie" at Grafton and then "Yandooya" at Wongwibinda.

I have tried to maintain this "class" in my breeding programme while keeping the dogs effective in their work.  She had great cast, cover and footwork and was a lovely natured, easy going dog to live with.  I have been so lucky to have had such a quality bitch to establish my bloodlines with. She lived to the considerable age of 16 having worked quite hard all her life.

 Cubberoo Donnee  (1990- 2007)

Donnee aged 14 1/2                                                Glenville Swannee

                               Sandee aged 12

Donnee is the litter sister to Cubberoo Sandee (Sandy), being only the 2 pups from the mating.  She is a very stylish bitch with wonderful cover and footwork, a very big cast and good break out.  She has spent her life with both sheep and cattle work.  She has been working up until recently and would still line up if given the opportunity at nearly 16. Donnee is also vice free and could be left with a mob in the paddock.

Sadly, Donnee died peacefully on Easter Saturday, 2007 aged 16 years and 4 months, a grand age for a working kelpie.  She had not been ill and still had a beautiful coat and was in lovely condition.  She will be sadly missed as she was a lovely dog with immense talent and like her mother lived a very long and healthy life.

 Cubberoo Grace (1992-2004)

                               Brook & Grace                                                            Riana Ace

Grace was probably the "smartest" working dog, as far as reading her stock and knowing what they were about to do, I have ever seen.  Her style was not as classy as either her mother or Donnee but she was quite uncanny how she would position herself in the paddock to prevent troubles occurring.  She could be left in the paddock with a mob to bring along for long periods while you mustered somewhere else.  Not only was she a paddock dog, but quite a handy yard dog too, freely backing and would bark on command or when required naturally.  She worked both sheep and cattle very effectively all her life and always paced herself so as to be able to keep working all day even in the harshest conditions.  Sadly, she had to be put down at nearly 12 after being bitten by a redback spider and developing a neurological ataxia from the venom some weeks after the bite, she was still looking like she did all her life, very fit and healthy and would probably have lived to a very ripe old age otherwise.  She was also vice free except for foraging on chook food or anything she could find in that department, her nick name was "Porky" as she was always a "good doer".  Probably my all time favourite working dog.

 Cubberoo Slipper (1995-2009)

                       aged 12

Slipper is a big, active bitch, very much a female version of Boots in appearance.  She is absolutely tireless and will always give a bit more.  She is an intelligent worker with a medium cast and medium eye, is very free moving on a mob and has a big loud bark.  Slipper likes things to be happening and will move stock along pretty well if left unchecked, but can be left with a mob in the paddock.  She has an outgoing, friendly nature and would still line up for work at now 12 years of age.

 Cubberoo Lottee (1998-    )

Lottee is a joy to work as she is so natural, she rarely needs to be instructed in her everyday work.  Similar in style to her mother and grandmother.  She has lovely cover and footwork and a big wide cast, balances well and works her stock in a nice quiet manner, but has a natural bark which she uses when required on cattle. I can leave her with a mob in the paddock. Lottee only worked cattle for the first half of her life but now works both, as well as geese, goats, ducks, chooks or anything else that moves and has the ability to always know at what distance to work from her stock and, therefore, can be used with ewes and baby lambs and cows and baby calves without annoying them. She is not a big bitch and looks similar to her ancesters, the Newton bitches, Fawn and Jenny from their photos.

 Cubberoo Silver (1998-    )

Cubberoo Silver                                                9 fawn pups by Riana Banker

Silver is a fawn and tan good sized bitch with similar work to Lottee, she is a very friendly easy going dog with nice calm work.  She looks more like Blocker than Donnee, where as Lottee is much more like their mother. She has produced quality progeny from her matings, when mated to Riana Banker, a red and tan dog, she produced 9 fawn pups, pictured above, which is quite unusual.

Tynndyl Boo (2004-    )

Boo was very generously given to me by Roger Smith as he thought she suited my bloodlines.  Having been in drought for her entire life she has done almost no real work but shows great natural style and ability.  If it ever rains it will be quite exciting to see how she matures.
Boo has a litter by Riana Trapper which we hope will produce something special.  Trapper has a good pedigree and a nice way of doing things making the complete package.

Dogs:

Cubberoo Blocker (1995-2003)

Blocker was a good all round station dog, working sheep all his life at "Goondoobluie".  He was a calm, but purposeful dog, who would bark when required, nice big cast and good cover and quite classy.  Like most of the Boss line he was tireless and would work all day in the heat and burrs.  Sadly, while still in the prime of his life at just 7 years of age, he was found dead on his chain early one morning, presumeably had been bitten by a snake overnight.  He had only been mated sparingly producing some quality progeny.

 Cubberoo Albert (2002-    )

                Cubberoo Albert                                                        Halliday's Charlie

Albert, a black and tan dog,  has the switch on power and great walk up force from his sire and will bite noses on cattle. He has sired some classy progeny both with mine and outside bitches.

 Cubberoo Charlee (2002-    )

Charlee is a good type of kelpie, blue with plenty of leg under him.  Like my other Hallidays Charlie progeny, he has great walk up force and switch on power when required to compliment his other features.  Due to spending virually all his life in drought he has not had the "real work" that my dogs normally have but has still grown into a very useful dog who is a pleasure to work.  He will nose bite cattle when required but has no bite at all with sheep . He has great natural distance with stock as well as good cover, footwork and generally good all round style. He will bark when necessary and has very good strength with both sheep and cattle.

 Cubberoo Litter  (b.23.10.09)

This litter is by a lovely young cream dog who has impressed me greatly, he works his stock the way I like them to, so combined with Boo I expect very stylish pups who approach their stock correctly.
